My interest in military history, and far off exotic places began for me, at a young age, hearing stories of “the war”, and being in a military family, (5 children and our dad all served in the military).

The 1950`s were still recovering from the privations of the recent conflict, Korea had just happened, and rationing had just ended, Dad wasn’t in the best paid job, and mum was a stay-at-home wife, I read as much as I could, most of it being military related, I was and still am, very proud of my fathers service in the “Seaforth Highlanders”, a regiment with a fearsome reputation, who would be put against any hard to break target, and usually winning the day !

This early childhood gave me a massive interest in all things military, and would lead to me serving too. I met many very interesting people, and made some awesome friends, many who sadly are no longer with us, I thought before I go to my maker, I would do something, anything, to keep alive the memories of those that gave their all for their country, not just my country, but all nations, as a soldier, no matter from what nation, is a person who will lay down their life for his or her homeland.

To this end I started to promote visits to battle sites around Europe, then decided that this was not the only area that suffered conflict, very few nations on this planet, have avoided it, some have seen more than their fair share, some are still suffering sadly, and I for one would be happy to see an end to all of it globally.
A visit to many of the battle sites around the world, is not only emotional, but can be very educational, there is the obvious political history involved, the human side of it, then for me the most interesting, the military engineering, and the strategy, the myriad ways different engineers solved the same problems, and some of the mighty fortresses they made, I live in Malta, with some of the most intact fortifications in the world, spanning several centuries, which just fueled my desire to promote a visit to one of these sites, I hope this site will help others to travel and honor the sacrifice of previous generations, for without them, our world would be a very different place !
